7 ways to lower your energy bill this summer

Summer is well and truly here in Spain! With it comes warm summer nights, full of laughter and good memories. However, it also means a substantial increase on the electric bill, as a result of trying to cool down your home. As we push through the final months of summer, where we have had multiple heatwaves, our fans and air conditioning has been put to the test.

But is there a way of keeping cool during the summer, while keeping the electric bill to a minimum?

Here are Energy Nordic’s top 7 tips to help beat the heat, while reducing your carbon footprint and saving on your electric bill!

  1. Take advantage of the time when energy costs are lower

As we are now all most likely aware, Spain have implemented their new 2.0TD and 3.0TD tariffs that affect all energy consumers across the country. The tariffs have different time periods for consumption, spilt over differing time bands in which the cost of electricity will be different throughout the day. Read more here.
Ensuring you run high consumption appliances during cheaper periods of the day will help keep bills at a minimum.

  1. Make sure your appliances are energy efficient

By switching to new and improved appliances which have energy efficient certifications and guarantees, it is possible to save an additional amount of money on your electric bills. While also reducing your own impact on the environment, upgrading certain appliances will increase optimisation of your consumption.

  1. Clean air conditioning units and vents are important

Again, efficiency is key when it comes to saving on your electricity bill. In order for an air-conditioning unit to function efficiently, the filters, coils, and fins must be maintained regularly. By replacing your filter, you will be able to lower the air conditioning unit’s energy consumption by up to 20%. Have you had your air conditioner checked by a professional recently?

  1. When feeling hot, start by using natural ventilation or fan

If you live somewhere it might perhaps cool down a little at night or even just a regular breeze, eliminate electricity use although by opening the windows and get some fresh air in.

  1. Enjoy the outdoors

This might seem obvious, but the less hours spent at home, the more likely you are to use a lot of electricity. So, enjoy the summer with friends and family by the pool or beach, during the warmest hours of the day and save money, that you otherwise would have used on cooling down your home.

  1. Plugged in devices still uses battery

By unplugging devices from the outlets, it is possible to eliminate the “standby” electricity that appliances and other devices use, even when they are not in use?

  1. Hot shower?

Lowering the temperature of your water heater can help you save on your electric bill. Who needs a boiling hot shower during the summer anyway?

Don’t let an expensive utility bill ruin your summer. Follow these easy steps and start saving money and the environment!
