How The Telephone Scams Work?
These deceptive practices have become increasingly common in the energy market. The caller often sounds professional, even mentioning your current supplier’s name, your contract details or CUPS number (the code identifying your supply point). This creates a false sense of trust — but it doesn’t mean the call is genuine.
It usually starts with something like:
- “We’re updating your electricity tariff.”
- “Your energy company has changed its conditions.”
- “We can offer you a cheaper electricity rate if you confirm now.”
Sometimes, simply answering “yes” to a recorded question is enough for the system to register an unauthorised supplier change — a tactic already reported to Spain’s CNMC (National Commission for Markets and Competition).
5 Warning Signs of a Suspicious Call
- They promise a cheaper electricity tariff or an exclusive discount without explaining the conditions.
- They say they’re from “your energy company” but never give the full name.
- They insist that the offer is “only valid today” or that “you’ll lose benefits” if you don’t accept.
- They have your personal data (name, address, CUPS), but you don’t recall sharing it.
- They ask you to confirm your details or record your voice to “validate the offer.”

- Do not confirm or say “yes” unless you are certain who you are speaking to.
- Do not share personal or contract details.

- Write down the phone number, the name of the caller, and the company they claim to represent.
